Diaspora Nine MorningsThe Diaspora Committee of New York, in partnership with the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit (RIDU) and the Ministry of Culture, put on a spectacular show on Monday, 19th December, at the Nine Mornings Celebrations being staged at Heritage Square, Kingstown. This Activity formed part of the Week of Activities which the Committee held during this week, 18th December to 22nd December, to commemorate ‘Diaspora Day’, and to sensitize the Vincentian community, both at home and abroad, about the inter-relationship between migration and development. The Nine Mornings package which the group put on spoke highly of contribution. According to the group’s Committee Chairperson, Ms. Moreen King, “This is not only about sensitizing, it is also our way of giving back in some small way to our folks at home.” The morning’s activity began with devotions from the Salvation Army Church, and their dance group followed it up with a riveting dance rendition. Other performances came from “Bomani” and former calypsonian and now gospel artiste, Angus “Brigo” Lynch. Both artistes live in New York. There were numerous competitions organized by the Committee: cane eating; bush-tea drinking; singing; dancing; balancing items on the head; and many more. Also included in the contribution from the Diaspora was a karate and self defense presentation by Vincentian-born twins, Gillian and Julian Toney, who now reside in England. Local acts which complemented the contingent from the Diaspora showcased Calypso Monarch Tajoe and members of New Sensation. Both acts offered brand-new carols that were, in fact, being rendered for the first time in public. Also gracing the stage was ten-year-old dancer Nxeda; and the Krazy Komedy Krew, which gave the audience a treat with a lip-sync rendition of General Degree’s “Granny”. Members of the Committee were able to give the audience a snapshot idea of the purpose of the group and details of their activities here. All in all, the morning’s programme was well received and, for those who journeyed from the Diaspora and performed, it was a morning to remember.
