New Faces of Fashion

Regardless of whoever graces the catwalk at local fashion shows, Vincentians are always eager to see what our local designers have to offer, and especially at events like Fashion Caribbean where renowned overseas designers were feature presenters, it is always an opportunity to see how well our locals compare to what obtains on the outside.
The truth is, fashion is fashion and trends are trends. An individual’s taste, translated into fashion, may simply be an outpouring of particular aspects of his/her inspiration and creativity.
He/she may not necessarily be keeping up with the current trends, but these creations may ultimately have the potential to create new ones.
So, there was no surprise at all, the awe with which some of the designs from the “new faces of fashion” here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines were received at the recently held Fashion Caribbean which took place on Saturday, 14th August on the grounds of the Emerald Valley casino.
There was a total of eight such designers. Ingrid John of “Natural Beats” boldly moved out of her usual sphere and produced an exquisite line of accessories: belts, handbags, clutches, hats and jewelry. These were exciting and truly functional.
The other designers, including Jeremy Payne and Shernicia Mayers who have made presentations at all of the recent productions here in SVG, stuck to clothing. Of course, they did not disappoint.
Monifa Walker, Sophelia Blucher and Jinelle Charles injected their particular flavours: Monifa with her exciting, and adventurous concepts; Sohpelia with her traditional ideas with a twist; and Jinelle with her attempt at suave simplicity.
Deon Paul used peacock feathers to create flair, while seventeen-year-old Kevorn Bacchus gave an adolescent’s impression of fashion, tailoring his designs to that particular age group.
After that event, it may now be safe to say that fashion in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is alive and well, and the potential for further expansion seems limitless.
