Mayreau Keeps It Small and Cultural![]() Sailing boats, model boats , speed boats, … it was a weekend about boats,. After all, it was the Mayreau Regatta, and regattas are about boat-racing … furthermore, the only way to get to Mayreau is by boat, so it is understandable why there were so many boats. Activities to mark the Mayreau Regatta 2010 began on Thursday April 29 with a fishing competition, won by the fishing boat “Jessica” which landed 138 heads of fish, totaling 94 pounds. In second place was the boat “I Survive” which landed 88 heads with a total of 58 pounds. In third position was “Papa San” which landed 2 fish weighing 10 pounds. The other boat in the competition was “Equilibrium” which was disqualified for arriving late. Friday’s main activity was a talent show held at the Mayreau hard court. This was an excellent production, with a blend of local talent showcased through skits and stand-up comedy. The crowd was literally in stitches. The following day, May 1st , was the first day of sail boat racing. In class D, “D Shark” placed 1st in the first race, while “Bad Feelings” took the number 1 spot in the second race. In the C class race, “Elect” emerged winner in the first race, with “Solo”, which overturned in the first race, winning the second race. In Class B the sailing boat “Wet” won both races. On Saturday night, the young and young at heart had an opportunity to party – and party they did - during an incident free ‘Glow Fete’. Sunday, May 2nd was the final day of racing, with “Unity 1” winning the race in Class B, “Main Switch” winning in Class C and “Bad Feelings” dominating the race in Class D. On shore activities included musical chairs and trampoline for the kids, and a dancing contest for ‘hot girls’. Following the presentation of prizes, an after party was held, with the DJ keeping patrons on their toes for the session which went until midnight. On May Day, two excursions from St. Vincent landed several hundreds of visitors on Mayreau, to enjoy its crystal clear waters, magnificent scenery and serene environment. There was one near drowning incident, but quick action by a staff member of the Tobago Cays Marine Park Unit averted what could have been a tragedy. Security was everywhere and no acts of violence were reported. The Mayreau Regatta Committee wishes to thank all sponsors, patrons and sailors who contributed to the success of this year’s regatta.
