Beache Concerned About Maintenance Cost

Community groups in some instances will be managing tourism sites upgraded under a European Union funded drive. But Tourism Minister Glen Beache is wary about the cost of maintaining those facilities. Beache echoed this country’s varied tourism product when he spoke at the unveiling ceremony for the Falls of Baleine project, Friday November 27. A delegation, including Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantye, took the approximately one hour and half journey by boat to the northern coast.

The Tourism Minister pointed to the $468,715.00 spent on the Baleine venture, used to build a small jetty, wooden craft landing area, concrete works to the path, repairs to a gazebo, and raised walk- way to the Falls.Installation of three moorings and putting up of signs to ensure visitor safety were also included in the venture. The Baleine site will be under the auspices of the National Parks, Rivers and Beaches Authority: but Beache anticipates a huge maintenance bill.

Beache raised the same concern at the opening of the Dark View Falls, located in the North Leeward sphere. The Dark View Falls will be managed by the North Leeward Tourism Association, and Beache admitted there that maintaining that site would have been “challenging.” The Tourism Minister hinted at the introduction of user fees at Dark View, but the rates had not been decided.
