Canadian_National_Exhibition_Best_Booth_AwardSt.Vincent and the Grenadines was part of the first ever outing of Caribbean destinations at the Canadian National Exhibition 2013 (CNE) in Toronto. This venture captured the coveted award “Best New Booth” while at the same time making shopping for a vacation at the CNE a new experience.

The 18 day event (August 16 to September 02) was the ideal way to present the destination to Canadians. The islands of Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts and St.Vincent and the Grenadines joined to create an “Islands of the Caribbean” booth that was a big hit with the 1.3 million visitors that walked through the gates of the CNE. From the exquisite sand castle in the center of the booth bearing their national flags, to the back wall featuring a beckoning Caribbean beach, patrons could not resist entering the thatched gateway to the “islands”.

Apart from “travel specials” from Mariners Inn, Palm Island Resort, Young Island Resort and Tamarind Beach Hotel offered on a postcard flyer, the destination partnered with Cianfarani Travel to have a travel agent presence in the booth to follow up with clients and promote destination weddings.  To draw more attention to the islands some additional attractions were offered- steel pan playing at the CNE Outdoor Beach Bar; Rum Tastings in the Beer and Wine Garden; a Caribbean Chef on the Food Network stage; a live band and dancers on the International Stage; and a partnership with Caribbean Tales saw Caribbean short films from Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia and St.Vincent and the Grenadines screened in the Presentation room at the Direct Energy Center.  This outing at the CNE sought to get Canadians thinking about their upcoming Winter getaways and offering SVG  as great option  for the winter and beyond.

Vincy_Day_USAFor the second year Vincentians got together for Vincy Day USA..a day of togetherness: music, sharing, culture, food, fun and maybe most important reacquainting with family and friends.  In terms of numbers and diversity of entertainment, this second event was by far more successful than the first and, judging from the comments received, those who attended have already put it on their calendars for next year.  As the numbers grow however, the organizing committee, which includes the US Director of Tourism, faces greater challenges in terms of funding and other logistics.

With the opening of the Argyle International Airport just over a year away, the Tourism Authority took the opportunity to attend Vincy Day USA (the largest Vincentian gathering, so far, in the USA)  to conduct a survey of the Diaspora, identifying the impact the airport will have on future travel plans.  The survey was designed to capture critical data needed to aid in presentations to the international airlines, when negotiating for flights into the new airport. The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority was represented at the event by Mr. Glen Beache (CEO), Celia Ross-Latham (Director of Sales, USA), Eleen Ackie (Assistant Director of Sales, USA),  Annie Nedd-Peters (Executive Assistant), who was on vacation in the USA at the time. Karen Johnson of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines' Consulate in New York set up a table with tourism literature and worked  with the crowd to get the surveys completed. This survey will run until January 2014 and can be obtained at the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Office in New York, or at the consulate office at 801 Second Ave, NYC.  The survey can also be completed online at http://svgairportcontest.org/

Intern_Dieta_Tucker"Securing a position as an intern at the SVG Tourism Authority (SVGTA) for the month of August, ended the adversity of finding a suitable placement which should have been three months duration. The first thing I have learnt even before embarking in the world of work, is that one must not limit his/her choices but expand on the possibilities that are all-encompassing".

This statement was made by Ms. Dieta Tucker, a Bachelor Degree student in Tourism and Hospitality Management, at the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill); according to her  it was a pleasure to be a part of SVGTA's team which in her perspective, is one of of the prominent organizations to work in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She further stated that her working experience was a successful one.

Dieta felt that although her time was limited, she gained a wealth of experience over the month, which would help to improve her presentation and communication skills, and also in the boosting of her self confidence.  She promised to adopt the working habits which she gained at the SVGTA and take it where ever she goes.  "I have developed a new work ethic, and attitude towards working life. It is safe to say that eight hours a day is well spent, when you are treated as an equal", Dieta commented.

International_Conservation_ExperienceMundelein Review reported that in Mustique, Alex Ty Kovach, new Executive Director of the Lake County Forest Preserve, Illinois, USA "reached out to young students for the reforestation of a large field."

Kovach commented that "Kids didn’t merely plant trees. They cultivated seeds in a nursery and stabilized soil with an enormous mulching process.” He even booked lecturers for talks about the long-term impact on the local ecosystem and economy. The goal was to nurture a generation of stewards.  “It was a program that once they grabbed a hold of it, they really ran with it," he said.
