KNOWLEDGE CHECK ON HAIROUNA

215 years ago the Garifuna people of St. Vincent was exiled to an island in 1797, by the British.
What is the name of the island?

The answer will be published in the next issue.

Issue#13 Knowledge Check on Hairouna:

St. Vincent was given a name by the Kalinago people, who inhabited the island, when the Europeans first landed.
What is the name?

Answer: Hairouna

St. Vincent was called Hairouna (The Land of the Blessed) by the Caribs or Kalinago people. The Ciboney was the first people to live in St. Vincent. They hunted using basic tools and weapons. Other aboriginal groups were the Arawak and Caribs who arrived from South America, and slowly displaced the Ciboney. No more than 100 years before Europeans arrived in St. Vincent, the Caribs defeated the Arawak. Later, in 1635, the African slaves who survived the sinking of a Dutch ship arrived on the shores of St. Vincent. They merged with the Caribs and later become referred as the Black Caribs or Garifuna. On March 13th 2012, the International Garifuna Research Centre or Yurumei House was opened in Arnos Vale, St. Vincent, by the Garifuna Heritage Foundation.
