TOURISM AUDIT TEAM TRAINING

tourguides_trainingThe month of August was filled with great achievement and excitement for the Quality Development and Quality Assurance units in the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority (SVGTA). The Tourism Audit Team which comprises of representatives Fire Department, Environment Health Department, Physical Planning Unit, SVG Hotel Association  SVG Bureau of Standards and SVGTA underwent training in carrying out hotel audits. The training which ran from the 2nd to the 10th August was conducted by  Mr. Dominic Bain, Hotels Inspector trainer from the Ministry of Tourism in the Bahamas.

During the eight (8) days of training, participants engaged in both the theoretical and practical elements of hotel audits and salient role which each agency plays. The practical element of the training was done through a series of mock hotel audits at ten (10) properties on St. Vincent and Bequia.  On St. Vincent the six (6) hotels that volunteered are the  Adams Apartments, Beachcombers Hotel, The Bridge House Hotel, Mariners Inn, New Montrose Hotel and Young Island Resort.  The four (4) properties on Bequia are the Village Apartments, Spring House, Sugar Apple Inn and Bequia Beach Hotel.

The Authority commends all properties for their support thus far in this exercise. Additionally, commendation is given to the fifty (50) properties that have pre-registered for the Standards and Audit/Inspection process.  Pre-assessments/audits will take place during the months of September and October, and will be done with the aim of assessing the current status of each property and ultimately identifying areas for improvement and assistance.  All properties are encouraged to pre-register by filling out the required pre-registration form which is available from the Quality Development or Quality Assurance Units at the Authority.

 

TOUR GUIDE CERTIFICATION

tour_operators_certificationOn the 30th August, 2011, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority (SVGTA) held its first certificate presentation at the NIS Training Room.  The ceremony which was ably chaired by Tourism Advisor, Dr. Afzal Abdool, saw fifty-six tour guides receiving certificates signifying their completion of the mandatory Tour Guide training coordinated by the Authority.  The five (5) day training focused on five areas pertaining to tour guiding; Tourism Education, Know Your Destination, Customer Service, Practical Tour Guiding Techniques and Basic First Aid.  

At the presentation ceremony, CEO of the Authority, Mr. Glen Beache highlighted the importance of tour guides to the tourism industry while main facilitator/trainer Ms. Marina Lampkin encouraged the tour guides to continue developing and harnessing their skills in order to become the best at the service which they provide.

The Authority will continue tour guide training in the months of September and October in Canouan, Union Island and Mayreau.

Whitney_OllivierrerevSVGTA’S NEWEST STAFF MEMBER

Ms. Whitney Ollivierre is St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority’s (SVGTA) newest member of staff.  Ms. Ollivierre joined the staff of Authority on August 8th as the Receptionist.  A warm welcome is extended to Ms. Whitney Ollivierre from the Board of Directors and Staff of the SVGTA.

 

ARGYLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL BUILDING GROUND BREAKING

IADCOn August 10th 2011, work commenced on the construction of the terminal building of the Argyle International Airport. This followed the sod turning ceremony on August 7th to signal the   start of the terminal’s construction. Dr. Rudy Matthias CEO of the International Airport Development Company (IADC) stated in his address that ongoing earthworks are expected to be completed by mid 2013.

YACHTING TO TAKE CENTER STAGE IN OECS TOURISM POLICY

yachtingOECS tourism stakeholders attended a conference in Antigua on August 17th - 18th 2011, to discuss the finalization of an OECS Common Tourism Policy. The importance and value of yachting to OECS tourism is expected to play a major role in the policy. This would include a new status for yachting in the Caribbean, and is considered timely given the yachting sector’s potential for regional tourism.

Miranda Krestovnikoff, a qualified diver, has presented television programmes such as BBC2 series COAST, BBC TWO's Hidden Treasure and History Mysteries and  Channel 4's Wreck Detectives. She also makes guest appearances on BBC ONE's Countryfile.

Answer:  Petroglyphs

The Layou Petroglyph Park is the best known and most easily accessible petroglyph site. It is pre-Columbian in origin of unknown age, and most likely dates to between 300AD and 600AD. Petroglyphs can also be found at Buccament, Barrouallie and Mesopotamia.
