NEW APPOINTMENTS IN ST. VINCENT & THE GRENADINES’ TOURISM INDUSTRY

 lo_res_Minister_CaesarThe Hon. Saboto Caesar has been sworn into office as the Minister of Tourism & Industry, following the December 2010 elections held in St. Vincent & the Grenadines. Minister Caesar is a lawyer by profession.  He is the holder of a Master of Laws degree from the University of London with a specialization in Banking and Finance Law; a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies; and a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School. His wide-ranging professional experience in government administration was garnered from his work as a Lawyer, Parliamentary Secretary, Government Senator and Minister. He is extremely enthused about working with all stakeholders to continue to position St. Vincent and the Grenadines as a diverse, globally competitive tourism destination.                                    

CEO_Glen_BeacheA new Chief Executive Officer has been appointed in the St. Vincent & the Grenadines Tourism Authority (SVGTA) in the person of Mr. Glen Beache. Mr. Beache served as the Minister of Tourism in St. Vincent and the Grenadines from 2005 to 2010.  Prior to this, he was the Senator and Junior Minister of the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing from 2003 to 2005.  From 2002 to 2003, he was the Marketing Manager of the Ministry of Tourism.  Mr. Beache also worked as a Junior Political Consultant for the KMT political party of Taiwan in the 2000 elections, and as a Junior Political Consultant with the Al Gore Presidential Campaign.  In 1998, he worked with Lazlo and Associates in Washington, DC. He possesses excellent communication skills, and has great presence.  He is honest, loyal, and is an excellent team player, who remains focused on his objectives. As a former national athlete, he was able to draw on his expertise and discipline to provide effective leadership as Minister of Youth and Sports when it was part of the portfolio of the Ministry of Tourism.

As the Minister of Tourism, Mr. Beache played the leading role in the establishment of the Tourism Authority, a significant initiative that has enhanced the role of Tourism as a critical sector of the country’s economy. The CEO holds a Degree in Public Relations, with a minor in Marketing from Humber College and York University.  He also holds a Degree in Political Science, with a minor in Mass Communications from Carleton University in Ottawa.  He obtained his Masters in Public Policy and Administration, specializing in Health and Educational Policy from the University of London.  He also holds a Certificate in Mandarin from the University of Taipei.
Glen is married to Dr. Simone Keizer-Beache, and is the father of two children.

 

SVG TOURISM AUTHORITY CHRISTMAS CHARITY

Gift_BasketFor the second consecutive year, members of staff of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority spearheaded a Christmas Charity with the aim of spreading cheer and extending hospitality to the less fortunate in the society.

The 2010 Christmas Charity undertakings held on the morning of December 24th- Christmas Eve, involved preparing and serving breakfast to approximately forty homeless persons around Kingstown, as well as the presentation of gift baskets to two less fortunate families from the Sandy Bay area.  Ms. Lusanda Baptiste and Ms. Millicent Baptiste were the recipients of these baskets.
The Christmas Charity concept was developed by the staff of the SVGTA as their annual goodwill gesture. young_island_dinner

Meanwhile, on January 2nd 2011, members of staff of the Authority along with the Board of Directors celebrated the Authority’s 2nd Anniversary with a Dinner at the Young Island Resort; the dinner also served as the social event for the season.

 



GOLD AND SILVER ADRIAN AWARDS

adrian_awardSt. Vincent and the Grenadines won the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Gold and Silver Adrian Awards, for the country’s outstanding broadcast coverage on four (4) national television programs in less than one year. 

SVG won the Gold Award in the “Feature Placement Television” category, for the five-minute, coveted placement on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” America’s #2 morning news and talk show with 4.5 million viewers each day.  In addition, the destination was awarded a Silver Award in the “Marketing Program Consumer” category, for all-encompassing television coverage in less than one year.

The Adrian Awards – now in its 54th year – is the world's largest and most prestigious travel marketing competition.  The winners were acknowledged at a black-tie special awards presentation held at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square Hotel on Monday, January 31 2011, historically attended by more than 700 industry and marketing executives.  These broadcast campaigns were led by the Tourism Authority and SVG’s New York-based public relations agency, Spring, O’Brien & Co., Inc. 
Founded in 1927, HSMAI is an individual membership organization comprising nearly 7,000 members worldwide, with 36 chapters in the Americas region.

NEW TOURISM PROMOTIONAL BAGS

promo_bags_002Have you seen SVGTA's new promotional bag as yet?  The bag was recently introduced at  SVGTA's offices  in New York, London, Canada and Kingstown. The bag is to be used as a marketing tool that is aesthetically pleasing and functional for repeated usage.

This sturdier alternative to the ubiquitous brown paper bag prominently displays photos of Bequia, the Tobago Cays and snippets of the destination’s four main niches: weddings and honeymoon; eco-adventures; diving and yachting. It also features the destination's website, and will be utilized as a promotional tool at tradeshows etc.



INAUGURAL CRUISE SHIPS VISITS

Azura_Inaugural_loresSt. Vincent and the Grenadines received its second inaugural cruise ship call for the 2010/2011 season. To mark the occasion a plaque exchange ceremony for the ‘Azura’ was held on November 23rd 2010.  ‘Azura’ from P&O Cruises visited with approximately 3100 passengers and 1100 crew. Plaques were presented to Captain Keith Donds by the SVGTA, Port Authority and Agent Corea and Company.

Cruise_ship_pics_002Meanwhile on December 27th, the Cruise Ship Terminal was a buzz of activity with three (3) inaugural visits of cruise ships to St. Vincent & the Grenadines.  Cultural entertainment was provided for passengers arriving on Delphin Voyager, Marco Polo and Silver Cloud cruise ships. Other activities included plaque exchanges, and serving of local food and beverages to cruise passengers.

DESTINATION MARKET RESEARCH

researchjpgloresMarket Research on St. Vincent & the Grenadines (SVG) as a tourist destination has been undertaken and is currently at the field research stage. The Research is being spearheaded by SVG’s Public Relations Agency for UK/Europe bgb Communications.

The consumer research objectives include:

To determine awareness levels and perceptions of SVG, and to benchmark SVG against other destinations they would consider visiting. The target markets for this project are the USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany and Italy.

The proposed consumer panels are illustrated in the following table:

 CANADIcanada_tv_series_picAN TV SERIES “TOP 7: THE CARIBBEAN ISLANDS”

SVGTA’s PR Agency for Canada, Spring O’ Brien has made arrangements for  St. Vincent & the Grenadines to be featured on Canada’s new television series, “Top 7: The Caribbean Islands.”  Thirteen (13) one-hour segments have been sold to Evasion, Quebec’s only travel channel, with an airing schedule of August - December 2011.  The film crew will be conducting  their production shoot in St. Vincent & the Grenadines during the period February 11th -14th 2011. 

 


MUSTIQUE BLUES FESTIVAL

MustiquebluesThe Mustique Blues Festival originated in Mustique in 1995.  The festival is funded by sponsors and Basil’s Bar; performing artistes donate their time, along with the royalties received for recordings from a live CD that is produced each year. This year’s Festival ran from January 26th- February 9th 2011.
The 2011 line up featured: Marcus Malone, Ian Siegal, Dana Gillespie, Lewis Cohen, Paddy Milner, Dino Baptiste, Jacek Zaitz, Mike Paice, Jeff Walker, Evan Jenkins, Jamie Little, Felix Dennis, Carl Gustave, Joe Louis Walker.

Next year’s event will take place from January 25th - February 8th 2012.

  BEQUIA MUSIC FESTIVAL

bequia_music_fest_after_2k11The 8th annual Bequia Mount Gay Music Fest took place on Bequia from January 27th-30th 2011. According to the Bequia Music Fest organizers ‘the words on the lips of just about all the patrons were that they were blown away’. It was also quoted that last year the event was described as “the best kept secret in the Caribbean’; the huge audience figures this year made it clear that the secret is now very much out.

Performers included artistes from the Mustique Blues Fest, The Blues Band & "Patches" Knights, David Maxwell, Wry Wory, Toby Armstrong & The Mount Gay Blues Band, Arturo Tappin, NEXCYX, The Country Relatives, The Honky Tonics Jan & Louis, Jim Coleman, David Maxwell, Bob and the Bequia Blues Band, Denzil Bacchus Blues Band and Look Hooz Left.

The next Bequia Music Fest is scheduled for January 26th-29th 2012.

November marks the first month in 2010 since the month of June 2010 to record a month over month increase in visitor arrivals as shown in Chart 1 a. This may be the start of a much anticipated turn around in visitor arrivals heading into 2011. Notwithstanding the traction in the declines, the year - to - date comparisons for 2010 versus 2009 (Chart 1 b) continue to show a marked fall off in visitor arrivals and point to a full year decline that will likely be in excess of 10%. The sub-sector recording the highest fall- of is cruise which registered a 22.9% decline from 131 calls in 2010 versus 164 calls in 2009. Stay-over arrivals which fell by 3.6% was significantly offset by a 3.3% increase in yacht arrivals.

 

QUALITY CONSULTATIONS

The Quality Development Unit in the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority (SVGTA) will be hosting stakeholder consultations between the period15th- 25th February, 2011.  These consultations will be held with the aim of sensitizing tourism stakeholders on the content, training plans and implementation process of the four (4) approved standards.  The sessions will target hoteliers, tour operators, tour guides and short term vehicle rental operators on the islands of St. Vincent, Bequia, Canuoan, Union Island and Mayreau.  

Meanwhile, the SVGTA is encouraging all hoteliers, tour operators, tour guides and short-term vehicle rental operators to familiarize themselves with the standard that is applicable to their business; copies are available for purchase at the SVG Bureau of Standards. The cost of each copy ranges from EC$15.00 - $25.00.

VINCY MAS VIEW CARDS

panoramawebsiteresNow available for distribution to visitors, friends and families overseas are the 2011 Vincy Mas view cards. The front of the cards illustrates photos of some winners of last year’s competitions, including Soca and Calypso Monarch, Panorama and Queen of the Bands. 

The Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) has been utilizing view cards as a promotional tool for Vincy Mas. The programme of activities for the 2011 Vincy Mas is displayed at the back of the cards; the card also has a slot for postage stamp and a mailing address.

These souvenir cards of the “Hottest Carnival in the Caribbean” are available at the various ports of entry, the tourism offices in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, London, New York, and Toronto, various local business places as well as the CDC office at Victoria Park, Kingstown.
